The Old Whitgiftian Association has a full and varied programme of sporting activities
Shooting
The Whitgift Veterans Rifle Club (founded in 1896) is an active and sociable Home Office Approved shooting club, focussing primarily on the target rifle shooting discipline.
The Club meets regularly at the Whitgift School Range on Tuesday evenings, throughout the year, to shoot small-bore (.22) target rifle, and enters teams and individuals in the Surrey County Small Bore Rifle Association leagues (both Summer and Winter), as well as other competitions.
Between March and October, the Club also shoots full-bore (7.62mm) target rifle at the National Shooting Centre in Bisley, Surrey - generally at the weekend. The Club shoots in the London and Middlesex Rifle Association (LMRA) league, and also enters teams into the LMRA Public Schools Veterans (PSV), Surrey Rifle Association (SRA) PSV, and National Rifle Association (NRA) PSV matches. In addition, we run Practise Days (usually at the start and end of the season), and after the NRA PSV match (which is held on a Thursday afternoon/evening in July) we hold our Annual Dinner in one of the Clubhouses in Bisley Camp which is always a very enjoyable affair.
Whether small-bore or full-bore, full equipment and coaching is available and all levels of ability are catered for.
Applications for membership are welcomed from current and old Whitgiftians, and current and past members of staff of the School or OWA (some legislative conditions apply.)
If you are interested in learning more about shooting and the Whitgift Veterans Rifle Club, then please contact the Honorary Secretary, Guy Riches, either via email at guy.riches@wvrc.org.uk or by telephone on 07802 322166. We would be more than happy to arrange for you to join us at the Range one Tuesday evening to see what we get up to and to meet some other members. There is also plenty of information on hand should you wish to explore the sport or membership of the WVRC further.
